The form given in bold is the more appropriate one for its context.
(1) वह दानवी (ogress) इस रास्ते से गुज़रनेवाले आदमी को पकड़कर खा डालती है । ["रामचर्चा" by प्रेमचन्द]
As a warning (1) describes a normal danger to travelers, not an imminent one.
(2) उन्हें भविष्य की चिन्ताएँ खाए डालती हैं | ["उपन्यासकार जैनेन्द्र" by मनमोहन सहगल]
Worries and anxieties cannot literally eat a person up. Hence, the compound verb in -ए is more appropriate.

(3) मैं कहे देती हूँ, वहाँ रुपये गये, तो मैं ज़हर खा लूँगी। ["कुसुम" in मानसरोवर - भाग 2 by प्रेमचन्द]
The speaker is warning her husband that she will not tolerate disobedience.
